How do I make a clothing rack out of wood board for my basement?

    There are two basic construction styles as shown in the photo below. Note that the wood dowel rod that holds clothing should not be longer than 4 feet to prevent sagging. For longer lengths you should provide another support post to the middle of the rack. Basements tend to be damp and could be subject to flooding. Make sure that the completed rack will hold the bottom of clothing at least 1 ft above the floor. Plan on using plastic containers to protect your clothing both from dampness and insects.

    The rack on the left has a mortise and tenon joint holding the posts to the base. A simpler method would be to use long (5") screws. The rod at the top slides through holes drilled in the posts. You will need a circular saw or crosscut hand saw, and a drill. The rack on the right is simpler in that it only requires holes drilled in the posts for the dowel rod, with straps, cable or chain to limit spreading of the uprights. You would still need a saw and a drill.
