Hello Elaine! You should be able to declutter your closet in less than a day! It will involve making some hard decisions about things you don't need, don't wear, and will never wear! I try to do this about twice a year. I have also learned to buy less and be pickier and more realistic about what I need and what I will actually keep wearing!

Elaine: Here is a strategy for decluttering. But my main question when I declutter is: "Does this bring me JOY?"

    Hi Elaine,

It depends on the size of your closet and the things you need to organize. Here's a lot of ideas created by other Hometalk members. Take some to look at these many ideas to figure out what will work best for your situation. Wishing you the best.

  • Assuming you're talking about de-cluttering clothes, put everything out on your bed and ask yourself if I was packing for a trip and could only take one ______ (jean, slacks, skirt, dress, t-shirt, blouse, etc.), which one would it be? Then take that item and put it back in your closet. Keep going, alternating among the various clothing types, until your closet is filled to the level you'd like to maintain it. Then, bag up the rest for donation! If you're talking about decluttering a storage closet (odd items), pull everything out, sort it into categories so that all things that go together are stacked together, then ask yourself how often you use these things. If more than a year has passed since last you used it, get rid of it, unless it's special memorabilia. Then, get plastic storage bins and start filling them, sorting through the individual items within each pile and weeding out individual items that you have duplicates of, are in bad repair, simply don't use, etc. Items you use less often, store in plastic bins in the high shelves, or back/bottom of closet where they are not in every day reach, and those you use more often put in more accessible locations in the closet.
