How do I create an open floor plan?

I’m about to demo a wall separating my kitchen and living room. How do I get it done myself with little headache????

    Ummm... you must check with an inspector to see if this is a load-bearing wall!!

    Make sure it ISN'T a load bearing wall. If it is load bearing, you will have to put in a header and that is a headache and might be very expensive. Is there an electrical outlet on the wall? If you have a friend that is knowledgeable when it comes to construction, have him her take a look before you start knocking out walls. Good luck,

  • Best to check and see if it is a load bearing wall first. The one in my house is. Also check your local Building codes, typically changing a floor plan, moving duct work, electrical and plumbing requires pulling a permit. Even if you do the work yourself. And don't forget to notify your insurance company too and revisit your policy. Building codes in most municipalities can be found on line or at your local permit office.
