Hi Kathy! The easiest way to paint furniture (without sanding) is using a chalk based or mineral based paint. :) I recommending Annie Sloan, Jolie or Dixie belle. Dixie Belle is typically the easiest to purchase. They all work great!

You can check out my how to paint furniture without sanding here. :) Let me know if you have any questions. I'd love to help! https://letspaintfurniture.com/how-to-paint-furniture-without-sanding/

It depends on the old finish you are dealing with, the look you want, and the time and money you are planning to spend. I don't usually use expensive chalk paint. Wal-Mart carries reasonably priced chalk paint as does Amazon. I also sometimes mix it equal amounts with samples of latex paint to get the color and finish I want. Clean the piece before you start and you will be amazed at how grimy some things are. If I'm not stripping it down first, I at least sand off the surface finish. If you are going to paint over stained wood, I seal it first so I don't get bleed through. Use a light hand painting so there aren't drops or build up. Expect to apply more than one coat

I always use a clear sealer on my furniture to protect my work. Also protect the surface you are working on (like your patio) because no matter how careful you are, spills and drips happen (I use inexpensive tablecloths and drop cloths from the dollar store for projects).

  • Clean it well. Lightly sand the piece so that paint sticks. Prime if necessary (dark to white for instance.) And then paint. Topcoat if it gets heavy use. I like latex paint in eggshell finish or chalk paint. For a top coat, I like polycrylic. It won't yellow over time. Be sure to use good brushes for minimal brush strokes (I like purdy brand.)
