Would need to be sanded down to raw wood to stain. You can paint.

Do you know what kind of wood the table is?

How was the table finished before you tried to change it?

What did you use to remove this old finish?

What stain product did you use?

  • Did you sand it to raw wood?

Sometimes gel stain can hide flaws.

Otherwise, resand it and make sure it's completely sanded. Use a stain conditioner before the stain. Wipe it on, let it sit for 5-10 minutes and wipe it off. Let it dry. Add another coat if necessary. Then top coat it. Sand using 400 grit between top coats.

Must first sand it down, wipe it clean and then apply stain with a clean rag and repeat two more times with sanding, wiping clean and restaining then last step is to coat with varnish to protect it. CANT JUST PUT STAIN OVER PREVIOUS FINISH. IT HAS TO BE SANDED DOWN THREE TIMES AND STAINED THREE TIMES TO DO IT THE PROPER WAY.
