I always used wooden stakes or rebar -- tying the growing tomato plants to them with slices of panty hose. The panty hose keeps them upright without digging into the plants.
We always use wooden stakes to support our tomatoes. Then I use these velcro like wraps to tie the tomatoes to the stakes. Works great
