How is the best way to paint roll portion of rolltop desk?

I have a cheap desk from Habitat, the top portion is not removable (glued together) and it's that orange-y finish. I would like to paint the whole thing with a chalk paint. Any tips would be great!! TIA

As the top slides it may scratch the chalk paint. Think about enamel.
