The melamine cabinets are a dingy white and cracking in places - want to update them until we can afford new cabinets. What type of paint should I purchase? Thanks

Barbara: Take off doors and hardware (label where they go back) ...not taking off hardware looks like an amateur job. Clean well, PRIME!, and then two coats of GOOD latex paint!

  • Hi Barbara,

I don't have any personal experience working with melamine cabinets, however, this post is incredibly informative. Hopefully this helps!

I recommend using Kilz primer and a latex enamel gloss paint. Roll, don't brush.

I would recommend priming them with STIX primer or BIN Shellac Based Primer. Fill in any of the cracks with wood filler in between coats of primer. And then paint with an enamel based paint like benjamin moore advance or sherwin williams emerald urethane trim and door paint.
