Outside I use sweetened cornbread and muffin mix. They go for the sweet and they can't digest the cornmeal. Pepper the mound liberally, it may take more than one application since you can't predict if that is enough for all the ants to share or the size of the ant. Large mounds and larger ants take more because of the cornmeal, but I have never had to go at it more than three times for a really large mound of big black ants. Keep an eye out for new mounds and treat them before they get large and it really helps. You can never be totally ant free, they are just a part of nature that never ends. Kathy's suggestion with the Diatomaceous earth is a good suggestion also, but use food grade so that it is safe for humans and animals. The cornmeal is safe for humans and animals, just deadly for ant type insects.
