Here’s what worked for us: https://www.frugalfamilytimes.com/2018/10/how-to-get-rid-of-mice-rodent-proofing.html?m=1
Peppermint oil will keep them away. You can soak cotton balls with it and place around. I purchased a spray that is 50/50 peppermint oil & cinnamon oil. I saw it in Ace hardware but I purchased mine from Amazon. Spray anywhere you can and reapply when the scent goes away. This worked well for me.
Sticky pads will trap them but you might consider that inhumane. We put a few of those in our garage. Warning, it'll also trap snakes.
These 2 things worked better than poison, cat, or traps in our case.
Peppermint oil will work, but be careful if you have kids or pets. And you need to find the holes where they are getting in and plug them up. Most decent exterminators provide a free inspection. Get one. Then heed their advice on plugging holes or any deterrent techniques.
