You can have a piece of glass cut. That's what I have on my dresser, chest of drawers, and night stands.
Poly is one way to protect it. Tung oil is another. Staining it alone is not enough protection. Leaving it unstained without using poly or tung oil is not protecting it.
Tung oil is great, hemp oil will also work to protect the new stained finish.
