What do I do with my old paneling?

We took some paneling out of a house being torn down. It’s probably 40 years old. Not wood! Kinda like backer board. Or something ..? Can you sand it and stain or does it jut need to be painted??? Thanks Gayle

I would just paint it, use a good primer first.
