I've had luck putting some chicken wire around the garden. It keeps most pests out, but you can step over it pretty easily to get to your garden.

Plant marigolds around the perimeter. Also, if you have your barber or beauty shop save hair clippings for you, put the clippings in little "bags" made from old panty hose and stake the bags throughout the garden. The human scent will keep critters away.

We built a fence. It needs to be 1 inch holes or less-- We used chicken wire. We made it strong. Some diggers got in! So, we dug down and did what you do on a chicken coop. Down a foot and then out a foot and replace the dirt. That worked. Still an occasional mole! We put a couple kitties inside the fence, and they successfully caught one of the culprits. There are anti-mole plants. We planted mint along the perimeter. So far, so good.

If you know someone who is a hair dresser, get hair clippings and mulch in your garden. Pet hair works too.
