It would take some cotton batting for softness and then stretch your fabric over top of that. There is a fabric glue spray that you can use to glue the cotton batting to the wood. The fabric could be fastened down under the top with staples. Staple the fabric once evenly on all four sides and then stretch and fold over the edges neatly to get a nice finish.
