I agree with Cheryl a picture would help. But lime wash and paint look great if it is a brick fireplace.

I painted our rock fireplace.
You need to dust/clean the bricks (I used a vacuum), prime, and paint. Use a nappy roller and a brush for tricky spots and corners. It may take a few coats of paint depending on how much of the red shows through. But it will look great when you're finished. Here's a before & after of mine.
