Can a cement flower pot still be used without a drainage hole?

I have a very large cement planter but it doesn’t have a drainage hole at the bottom. Can it still be used to plant annuals? I gave all of my late husband’s tools away so I don’t have a drill to take care of this myself. Thank you!

Hi Chriss, if you fill the bottom with a bunch of rocks (or really anything just to provide some breathing room) before you add in your soil then it should be just fine.

I put rocks and add charcoal then soil.

As suggested, filling in the bottom with rocks but make sure they are larger and allow for the water to drain.

Since you gave your husband's tools away, consider contacting the recipient and asking them to drill a few holes. That was a very sweet way to bless someone and I would be more than happy to do it if I were that person.

      Hi Kathy,

Thank you for your kind remark and your idea! All I kept was a hammer and screwdriver not thinking I may need another tool for another job. 🌻

Hello. I often fill my larger planters with styrofoam peanuts or a chopped up pool noodle to avoid wet feet on my seasonal plants, as well as to lighten and lessen the soil required on a supersized planter.

Kathy Gunter Law has the right idea. Just ask around and create warmth among people. When done offer them some coffee, a slice of pie, etc. Their smile will be your best reward.
