You need to clean off brick first. Use a scrub brush and TSP.
It won't be a quick project. You want to take your time and do a good job. This is a permanent change.

I would recommend Annie Sloan Chalk paint in Old White! I've seen several fireplaces painted in this color. You can also take a damp sponge to wipe off any excess white to give the fireplace a white washed look. :)
