I would definitely look at the free plans online. Because as soon as you start having contractors come over to “shoot you a price” on what you define as being “a lovely beautiful Pergola”,
they’re not going to give you apples to apples bids unless you have a set of specific plans to show them.
You need a finite scope of work.
Take your time, and research footings, structure, wind load, building materials, and construction methodology.
That way when you talk to the contractors, you know exactly what you’re talking about and you get apples to apples bids.
Lastly, if the Pergola is attached to the house, or the garage, or is over a certain square footage, then you are in the territory of being required to have building permits.
Please research that as well.
Building permits are to protect you, and to enforce your contractor to build things that are safe, and legal; it is also a contract releasing you of liability in three ways.
