How can I preserve a 1930's painted table top?

How can I preserve the painted top of my grandmother’s (1930’s) peeling kitchen wooden table? I don’t want to strip and redo, but to stop the peeling right where it is. I like the chipped/peeled look to far, but it is peeling more each day, especially with even gentle wipe-downs after use. It is a solid creamy color with designs painted on at all four corners. I have been afraid that more paint would come off if I tried to coat with a shellac or other similar product. Any ideas? Thanks!
