How do I clean a night stand top that has marks?

Kleenex box bottom stuck to top of night stand - water had obviously been spilled and left. Scraped paper of box off but have dark marks now.

Can you lightly sand it and restain? Depending on what material is is made of and if it's painted you could probably repaint the top.

  It is walnut around 50 years old. Was in great shape until this mishap. Wood not really scratched. The cardboard Kleenex box just stuck to wood after a glass of water was obviously spilled and left unattended for awhile. I scrapped off the paper with my fingernails, but now the coloring is much darker than the walnut original finish and I don't know what to use on it to get it closer to the original shade.
