Clearly, you'll need plants that are shade-tolerant. Talk to your local garden-store (or your nearest wise gardening neighbor) about what grows well in your climate region, and will grow well in shade. You should have lots of choices!

The picture doesn't show if there is a planter at the bottom of the house or is it all yard?

its kind of a flower bed. We took out a big bush that was there.

Looks like it might be on the north side of the house so I'm assuming that it's always shady. You could put azaleas in front of the porch. I like tall bushes or trees on the corner of a house so I say a Dogwood tree on the far right corner and other shade loving plants between there and the porch like: another matching azalea or two, than hostas, coleus, columbine, ferns etc.

Whatever you like! A good rule of thumb is to plant in rows beginning with the tallest growing plants closest to the house. You can start with a row of shrubs ( maybe azalea? ) up next to the foundation, followed by a row of hostas, then a final front row of pretty colored flowers.

Often your local nursery will give you free ideas and even a sketch or template to follow. They will also tell you which plants will do best in that area according to if that area gets alot of sun or is mostly shaded. Have fun!

I would build a planter there. Don't slope it make it level with the house. Some pops of color would look very good.

Columbine is hardy in Zones 3 to 8.

Spiderwort is hardy in Zones 4 to 11.

Coralbells are hardy in Zones 4 to 9, depending on cultivar.

The 3 listed above grow in shade and are easy to care for.

Visit your local nursery and see what would grow well there. You'd want to take away the focal point of the landscape which for now is the slope. Flowers could do that.

They could suggest what will do well in shade/sun in your zone. Bring pictures.
