When is the best time to cut back everblooming hydrangeas?

And how much should I cut back? I hear so many different things.

  • They actually don't need pruning, Barbara. If there are dead branches, or it gets overgrown, you can prune it.

    You can cut them back taking out about 30 percent of the bush each year. Prune after it blooms so it has time to form new buds for the next year. You can prune out dead wood anytime.

      Thank u! I will prune in the fall after flowers die off. That is what I have done in the past but I’m not getting a lot of flowers. It’s mostly leaves

    If it gets too much high nitrogen plant food it may put out more leaves than flowers.
