How do I clean patina pennies?

I’m wondering if after the pennies have patina and are ready to use, do you rinse or wipe the salt off of them before adhering them into place?

  I read a project on hometalk this morning where a lady soaked pennies in vinegar & salt. After she did the process she said they’re ready for use but failed to say What/How she treated them afterwards. She must have rinsed them one last time or wiped them off. She hot glued them to Big wooden letters.
