How to attach old door knobs?

How does one attach old wooden doorknobs with metal bars between knobs to empty holes in the door? The knobs need not turn as there are ball catches on door frames that keep doors shut by themselves. Some holes are perfectly round and some are odd shaped where old knobs used to be. Been trying to figure this out for four years.🙏

Well, with the very very old doorknobs in my house they attach to each other through the hole in the door and then their face plates go over to cover the hole and hardware.
Are the wooden knobs in pairs? Does one of them have a semi long rod/shank coming out of it and the other just has a hole in the back of it the same shape of the rod/shank? If so they are a door knob set and you should just have to put face plates on them, feed the rod/shank through the hole in the door and put the other one on the rod/shank. Tighten down the lock screw in the one without the rod/shank onto the rod/shank and then screw the face plates into the door to keep them from moving. If the knobs aren't pairs you will have to find a rod and face plates that you can use to fasten the knobs to the door.
Face plates go on the door leaving the holes. Some old door knob shafts are threaded and the knobs screw on the shafts. This was for different thickness of doors. The knobs have a small set screw to tighten them on the shaft. If the knobs do not screw on and the shaft is smooth then the knobs just tighten on the shaft with the set screw.
