Usually they put rocks because the chlorine will kill the grass.the white decorative kind
You could plant low growing shrubs and flowers around it but leave room for you to get to the sides to clean it.
Here are a few pics taken of my above ground pool.
Basically white rocks with a few plants will show it off, and not have to worry about the chlorine to much. It has never damaged any of our plants.
PS, get an automatic chlorinator for your pool, (if you don't already have one) it is the best ever.
