How can I start making a patio?

Other than cement. I need some ideas on where to start!

You can build a wooden patio/deck lower than the norm. I had used 2x4s and covered them with exterior grade plywood.to keep the boards placed correctly I used the width of penny as a spacer.
Most important, start by leveling the area. Once level, you can lay down a bed of sand and use brick or flagstone.
