How to remove varnish from an antique jewelry chest?
I have a beautiful hand painted jewelry chest that has been varnished (circa 1930-1940) The varnish is so dark you can barely see the beautiful paintings on the front and top of the chest. What is the best way to remove the varnish while preserving the paintings?

To do something so delicate as that, I would take the piece to a furniture restorer for best results.

I agree as anything you use to remove the varnish will also remove the hand painting. Antique furniture restorers have all sorts of tricks up their sleeves.
