Build a patio cover that keeps out rain but allows light?

The slider opens onto the patio from the eating area. There are also one window on each side of the slider. We receive a lot of rain in the Pacific NW, and I cherish the light that does come in thru the slider & windows. But how do I build a roof that will keep out the rain but allow the light to come through? My husband wants to be able to step on the roof to clean off pine needles & debris.

We live in Oregon and know what you mean. Hubby built a patio cover using 2 x 4's for the frame and sheets of wavy fiberglass panels from Lowe's. They are 2 feet wide and 12 feet long and come in various tinted colors but we went with clear for max. light penetration). We didn't want a dark cave just outside of sliding glass doors. He did this about 15 years ago and haven't had a problem (other than removing snow since they don't hold weight). They do tend to get brittle and yellow after about 10 years.
I agree with Mogie, you can also do an arbor with plexiglass on top. That's what we did

I'll second what one of the other commenters mentioned. You can purchased clear plastic roofing material that comes in 4x12 sheets that would be perfect for this.
