How do I make cinder block planters?

I have alot of cinder blocks and noticed people paint them and put plants in them. As my patio is huge and I have nodirt area I want to know what you put in the blocks so the dirt doesn't just wash away. Real good idea and I have lotsof flowers in pots. Thanks

Line with newspaper and dump the soil so U can plant.
