How can we resurface & slightly enlarge our tiled shower?

Our house is 50 years old and the master bath has a small tiled shower -it's dark and difficult to clean. We'd like to take out the tile and put in laminate like they have in hotel room bathrooms. We want to lower the step to get into the shower too for safety's sake. There's a large linen closet on one side of the shower that could be "used" to enlarge the shower too.

Expanding the shower to the linen closet means a complete demo of the shower and closet down to the studs and rebuilding from scratch. The "step" is actually a curb to prevent water from flowing out of the shower onto the bathroom floor. Best flooring for the bathroom would be either tile or vinyl plank flooring. It's waterproof. Looks like wood, ceramic and porcelain tile. The shower itself would need to be cement board, waterproofed, and tiled. Also the shower floor would need to be sloped towards the drain.

In this case to 'slightly enlarge' an existing shower would require the same amount of work as ripping this one out entirely and 'building a new one'.

  • You need a contractor. Here is how to hire one.

I have never seen "laminate" for flooring in a bathroom in any hotel, as it does not play well with water, I bet it was vinyl planks or tile.
