How can I save my polymer clay creation?

Basically I make lots of cute polymer clay creations. And all of them are unique! I can never make the same thing twice. This time I tried a real challenge and tried make a Speed-Stinger dragon from the how to train your dragon episodes! Because this was my first ever time making a sculpture that needs support to stand up I used foil (I don't have the money for strong wire because i'm legit only a kid)

It looks kinda like a velociraptor ;)

I fought it was going Ok at first!

Then it got better

And better!

And everything was starting to come together!

Just missing the arms fellow Speed-Stinger!

Seems nice!

But then once I had made it look almost like the cartoon version something happened... when I left it for more then five minutes without anything under it, it would start to break! Now every time I move it I have something like a toe or a arm come off (toes are sooooo hard to put back on without taking off the leg) And now i've come to the biggest problem... This was made for a friend who loves how to train your dragon and at first asked for a Whispering Death (look it up cuz i cant be bothered to find a pic right now) but it had waaayyyy too many spikes to make so I made the Speed-Stinger! Now i'm counting on YOU to decide what i'm going to do with it! Both ways could destroy it! as you might know polymer clay only hardens in the oven and is fragile once cooked, so should I cook it now and then put the finale layer which will make it very strong before re-cooking (but theres a %50 chance of it breaking and hardening in the oven) or try to put on the finale layer now (it again has a %50 chance of breaking while I try to put on the layer) but then once I put it in the oven it will not break! Please vote in the comments and if you can give me tips to make it survive longer because even know polymer clay doesn't normally harden unless in the oven, this sculpture has been out in the air for about two months and it's started to become very hard! So now when pieces break off I have to put more new and soft polymer clay and scrap the old one (once it's too hard you just can't soften it up with your hands or with baby oil ect)

How cool! Looks fabulous! Is your question about ideas of how to display them? What size are they?

Thx a lot! can you like vote on how i should make it? because it's been two months and i still can't decide, and if i just keep leaving it for too much longer in the end it will break down because it's too hard :( so i need pretty much anyone to decide for me!

Really, really great work Kiddo! I'm impressed! How about setting up a shadow box display for him where you can put supports under the pieces that bend (attach supports to the back of the shadow box). This will allow him to be displayed without parts breaking off.

that would be helpful but this speed stinger has gotta survive the post so i still need to find a way to fix it (can you vote for one of the two methods so that i kinda know which one to do because i simply can't decide on my own)

Will it soften up if you spritz it with water?

What about trying to insert toothpicks to hold it together while baking?

I think under the circumstances you should do the 1/2 baked idea first lol!

water and toothpicks is a no no but the half bake thing was like my original idea.. (btw sry for the late reply)

  • I have no helpful answer, but just want you to know you do magnificent work! Fabulous hobby! I am not a social media user, but you might consider sharing as someone may want to buy your pieces. If this is your passion, stay with it, you can turn this into a career if you wish when you get older. Be sure to take business classes! Wishing you years of success! 😍

Polymer clay does need to be baked. If you place them in a cold oven, set the temperature they will slowly bake and less chance of any damage. Make sure you leave them in the oven and let it cool down completely before removing. BTW, you are talented and do amazing work.

Put the final layer on now before baking. If you bake now and then put the final layer on both layers may separate and break. You want a good bond between layers. Let us know when you plan to list them for sale. Would love to see them and see if any I'd like to buy. Do you do anything Dr. Who?

im not really selling stuff like the Speed-Stinger cuz it's meant for a friend... also the doctor who im not too sure... (basically my brother LOVES it and I HATE it. But! I do love how to train your dragon so I could try like a night light sitting on top of it and the other two keeping the door open or something! (could easily go wrong)

I think you did a great job the other reply about starting a business, I agree. Set you up an online etsy shop. You do really good work and keep it up.

Thanks! Btw i was thinking of Etsy but the price for selling everything is just too high, and if my polymer clay for any reason doesn't sell then i'm spending money that I haven't even earned (if you don't know already i'm a kid) because Etsy makes you pay money just to have the item on sale and I am already paying about £40 in advance for all the materials which is a BIG amount of money for me (if I don't get it back with selling i'd be working for months to get that money back ) So i'm thinking about Facebook for now because theres a lot of people I know who would love unique models and charms!
