Wow, I mixed Dawn dish detergent with water one day and spot cleaned my carpeted stairs and the cleaned spots came out spotlessly like new and made the rest of the carpet looked Disgusting. I did all the stairs and the carpet looks super clean. It doesn’t take much Dawn. Good luck.
We own our shampooer and know it works well with sudsy cleaners. We use Simple Green because it deodorizes and disinfects too. We use it for all our cleaning and put the concentrate in the shampoo bowl to do our carpets and room area rugs. Hope this helps. We were told it is not toxic and we have been told it is slightly, but it is much less toxic than the chemicals from the shampooing rentals. I am very sensitive to toxins and it does not bother my health at all.
Use very little soap and cool water. Hot water,sets your stains. Also thoroughly rinse with cool water. Soap will actually attract dirt if left in fibers.

I used my homemade laundry detergent to scrub my carpets. Like Shannon said, Dawn also works great for spots.
