You can mix up some borax with sugar. They will take it back to the nest. Borax is a poison to them. Be careful if you have pets.

Amdro is the best thing to use if you are talking about fire ants.
DIY stores carry a product called Terro, it is a liquid they drink up and take it back to the colony. It works well, just follow the package directions.
If you have a parade of them, just put it in the middle of it.
Expect to see an increase in numbers at first, they love this stuff and they are hungry.
