Chalk based paints or mineral paints do not require any sanding before you paint. They also do not require priming. They are made from minerals that will adhere to almost any surface. :) Wood, laminate, glass, metal...etc. Annie Sloan brought chalk paint back to life over 25 years ago. She got with a manufacturer to develop "chalk paint" it is a registered trade mark by Annie Sloan. That is why your other brands like Valspar are a "Chalky Finish" paint. :)

Chalk paint/ chalky finish paint/chalk style paint are a big advantage because they save some much time when refinishing furniture.

They do need to be sealed properly with a finishing wax OR a waterbased poly. :)

Hope that helps! If you need anymore help you can check out my post on painting furniture without sanding. :)

Chalk paint boasts that you don't have to prime or sand before painting. Though it may be the case with some pieces of furniture, it's definitely not the case with all pieces. Anything that is shiny or slick will still not grab onto the paint like it should.

I use chalk paint all the time on furniture because I love the different looks you can achieve with it. And I still prime and sand lightly before using it.

It easily distresses, you can blend it with other colors for a boho look, you can get a really pretty solid finish in any sheen from matte to gloss.

I also love how fast it dries.

Chalk paint has a matte finish. I prefer it for furniture. It holds up well even with constant use
