How do I paint an exterior metal door?

Use exterior oil based paint for the most durable finish.

If you can take it down, it would be easier to paint. Especially if you will be spray painting. I have always brush painted mine while still hanging. Make sure the temperature and weather are consistent with painting. If you don't have a covered porch, that will be even more important because you don't want it to dry too fast in the sun's heat.

Scrape any loose paint.

Clean with denatured alcohol.

Tape up any areas not to be painted.

Using a paint that is formulated for metal exterior doors, brush or roll paint onto the door surface. Be prepared for two coats.

Once dry, remove all tape.

I would recommend Sherwin Williams' brand.
