If you want the a farmhouse look I would paint it white, gray or lighter blues or greens and distress it by sanding the edges. You could even add some wording/stencil to the side top or sides.
If there's texture on the surface, remove the hardware and, sand off the texture first. Then use a good primer and let that dry. I'm not into 'farmhouse' but once it's white with primer, you can go over it again with a soft gray or off white. Maybe a darker tone for the foot. Replace the hardware and find yourself a lovely stencil that matches your theme. Most of all, have fun!
