Just use 1/4 cup vinegar in your regular softener cup instead of Downy or Fleecy and you will find your clothes are whiter due to the soap being dissolved and they come out softer. There is no smell residue. The other bonus factor is that it also helps to clean your washing machine. It is also a lot cheaper to use vinegar with better results.
I just use white vinegar.
