How do I make this safe for my toddler to do activities outside?

This is what my back deck looks like. Planning to get rid of table and chairs and swing. How do I make it safe for my toddler to do activities outside? I’d like a good quality canopy to prevent the tree debri from falling on the deck. We can’t afford a sunroom or to replace our whole deck so what are some temporary solutions that would work for summer fun?
Replace deck boards that are in needs of it. Add a gate. Put up a tent like like people use for tailgating. Move plants where they can't be pulled over or eaten.
Besides everything Kathy has suggested, I’d give the balusters a good inspection and replace any that are weak or cracked. If you plan on your toddler running barefoot on the deck. Make sure the child won’t get splinters and can’t get toes stuck between deck boards. Oh and make sure they cannot get their legs between the balusters. You don’t want a spiral fracture. Have nothing they can climb on and get to the top of the rail. The fall could be deadly

To add to all the other good suggestions, add sun shade sails for the canopy also a few outdoor rugs on deck could be fun
Another thing to consider - to avoid splinters and scratches - is one of those outdoor "carpets". I think they're made of something synthetic and water drains through them. But they're easier on bare feet and hands and knees than deck planks - and smoother for rolling toys.
