I grew mine in a plastic garbage can that had cracked the bottom over time. I put a big garbage bag in in and put a lot of drainage holes in it. I filled the bottom with stones and gravel to help with drainage, put down landscape fabric to help prevent soil loss. I filled it with about six inches of soil, planted my potato eyes where I wanted and just covered them with soil. I waited until it grew about six inches, then covered almost all of the plant with more soil and so on until it was time to harvest. Each time you cover it, it causes it to grow new roots and another layer of potatoes.
