You can lay down multiple layers of newspaper or paper bags and cover lightly with mulch or soil. You can stake the paper down with landscape staples. You could also use landscape cloth and staple it down as it won't disintegrate as quickly as the paper idea.
We use cardboatd cut to size (or close to it). There are large sheets at big box stores like Sam's Club.
