Leave air circulation around generator and then screen around it with Bushes or old Pallets covered on outside or painted to look acceptable. That should help a bit to deaden the noise, but you get used to it in the end..........

You could also try to pit an insulated barrier around it as long as it doesn't interfere with the way it performs
Your local small engine ( think lawn mowers and ATV) repair shop may be able to add a muffler to it for little cost.
Muffler is a great idea...also, maybe a thick rubber pad or cork (?) underneath to reduce vibrations off of the floor. If it's in a shed, consider insulating the surrounding walls and door to keep the noises in.
