How do you get rid of the smell of heavy (cigarette) smoke?

Someone told me to put bowls of white vinegar through out the house. Not sure why, but soon after doing this, I had to go on a work trip and when I returned, the odor was gone, but you may have to repaint or scrub the walls, and or clean or replace the carpeting. I’ve been told that the nicotine sticks to surfaces

Hello Laura! Putting fresh paint on the entire house will help. Don't forget to paint the ceilings if you have ceilings that can be painted and the closets. Clean or remove any carpet as well. Wash woodwork with vinegar and set bowls of vinegar in all of your rooms. Vinegar does help take the smell away. Good Luck to you!

Use Murphy’s Oil soap on wood cabinetry, wood paneling, etc. and wipe Soren the walls with something like Mr. Clean. You will have to get rid of all the tar and nicotine that has clung to everything in the room. As you start this process you will probably be shocked at all the brownish yellow stuff on your walls.

Also if there are curtains/drapes from the previous owner consider throwing them away or at the very least wash them thoroughly.

Odo-Ban is by far the best thing I've ever used to get cigarette smoke out of things. I've had to do it quite often with big trucks. It's a disinfectant and odor eliminator. You'll probably want to buy the gallon.

Wash everything from ceiling to floor. A vinegar water solution works well. Once you start washing the walls, you will be surprised how much gunk comes off. Everything needs to be washed, including closets.
