For organization of earrings, I cut small pieces of foam (1/2" square) and put my earrings in those. That keeps the pair together and then I can lay them down without worrying if they will make a mess. I've seen egg cartons used as well.
For necklaces and earrings, I prefer small "L" hooks to hang them on. They won't get tangled and you can easily see them.

I have also used colored plastic canvas to store my earrings. Can be hing on wall or places in drawer.
