I have made macrame pot hangers, but no matter what type of fiber I used, they eventually failed without warning. The fibers are degraded by sunlight and water and eventually break. I got tired of broken and spilled plants, and decided to make a more durable design for plastic hanging baskets. You can buy the following items where hardware is sold:

welded steel ring about 2" diameter, 6 wire S-hooks about 1&3/4" long with weigh capacity of 20lbs or greater, 6 feet of small chain with similar weight capacity. S-hooks must be able to fit around steel ring and within loop of the chain. Compare before you buy.

Cut the chain into three equal lengths; you may have to remove a link from one or two chains to get equal lengths. Hook one side of an S-hook into the first loop of one chain. Close the S-hook by squeezing it with pliers. Slip the other end of the S-hook onto the steel ring and close that end by squeezing it with pliers. A closed S-hook looks like a figure 8. Repeat the above step twice more to finish the top of the hanger. Attach an S-hook to the bottom link of one of the chains, and close that loop so it can't come loose from the chain. Do the same to the other two chains. To finish, hold the steel ring above the hanging basket and hook each of the bottom S-hooks into the hole in the rim of the hanging basket. An alternative to the S-hooks is to use a quick-link with a section that screws open and closed. One hanging basket of mine had large openings and the quick-link was more secure for that.
