Clock are pretty common thrift finds, but what to do if you don't love the finish? Paint it, of course! Here's how to make a painted wall clock to celebrate the 4th of July - and on the cheap!

Sometime last year I found this interesting clock at my favorite thrift store for just $5.

There was a lot about it that I loved, but it seemed a little stuffy and boring. So since my investment had been small, I decided to dress it up with paint and since the fourth of July is right around the corner, I had red, white, and blue visions dancing in my head!

The slick surface of the plastic frame wasn't going to be a friend to the metallic paints I picked out, so I primed it with chalk paint first.

Next, I used metallic red craft paint to highlight the inner part of the frame.

Then, of course, blue, right?

It wasn't as hard as I had expected to get around those raised rectangles with a flat craft brush.

And even going over the white chalk painted areas with metallic paint was easier than I thought it might have been. Having the right brushes makes all the difference!

I loved how it was looking, but it still lacked the most important part...

the stars!

I cut a quick little star stencil with my Cricut Maker, then stenciled them along the blue part of the the frame with chalk paint.

No more boring wall clock and a ready decor piece for my porch in just a few short weeks!
