How do I perk-up/modernize an old style patio awning?

How do I perk-up / modernize an old style patio awning, 20 by 15. The structure is good so I don't want to tear it down. Thanks in advance for your ideas.

    You can paint it - if it is metal, be sure to use a wire brush to get off all rust first.

    Is the awning material the traditional cotton canvas or exterior grade nylon canvas? Waybe you could try painting the fabric a different colour or pattern/design.

    It sounds like the old style aluminum covers similar to clamshell hurricane shutters? Like this one???

    If it were me, I would clean up anything that needs scraping or wire brushing first and clean well. Build columns around the old metal upright posts using cedar or other outdoor wood. Paint the underside of the awning a pale blue which is said to deter bugs. Repaint the top side of the awning in a color that either goes with or complements your house. If you feel really ambitious, you could even do a decorative paint job on the top if it's seen from the yard (something like stripes to replicate a fabric awning). Good luck!
