What can I put around my plants instead of mulch?

We have free roaming chickens and they dig at everything. The mulch is now mixed with dirt.

There's a black tarp type thing you can get, I can't remember the name of it but it's like a black material specifically made to put on/in gardens. Cut slits in an "x" shape everywhere your plants will poke through. You can put it over top of the pre existing soil in the garden, it should keep the chickens from digging in your garden. And a bonus, I'm pretty sure you can buy them at dollar stores!
A friend of mine used to mulch her gardens with pine needles. She would pick them up on walks with her dog in the park.
Lava rocks allow water to soak through, help keep weeds down and the chickens can catch crickets without miving the rocks.
