You can use a roller, trowel, or a brush and apply a roll on texture. Homax makes a good one. Practice on cardboard until you are happy with the results.
I did my 17' hallway with spackling. Use a 4" paint scraper and dip the tip in the bucket of spackling to get about an inch of spackling on the blade. Apply to the wall in a criss-cross, up-down no specific pattern, to your liking. I loved the way the wall turned out with the light from the end of the hall giving light and dark texture to the walls after it was painted.
