If the shelves will extend from wall to wall, either front to back or side to side, put 1x2s at each end and along the back and nail or screw to the wall. Then put the shelf on top and screw vertically down into the 1x2

I went to lumber yard and got two pieces of 1 x 3" pine cut the depth of the closet. And then I got a piece of 12" melamine lumber cause I wanted it white and easy to clean the width of the closet cut. I screwed the 2 3" pieces into the studs on the sides of the closet making sure the shelf would be level. Then I put the shelf on top and screwed it down.

The most simple way is to attach L brackets to the studs in the walls and then place shelving board on them, making sure you attach to the brackets. If you look in the background of this picture, you can see that is what we did in our garage above the door and windows. You can get very pretty shelving board and stain and they make decorative brackets. We just went for the cheapest version since it's the garage.
