Don't store them in those cheap photo albums with a sticky backing. I have lost many pictures that become permanently stuck to that backing.
If they are physical photos you want to make sure the storage container is archive quality, acid, lignin and PVC free.
For digital photos, I like to back up on an external hard drive and on Dropbox.
